Personality
Every stereotype you can think of when you hear the word 'jock' pretty much applies to Puck. He's arrogant, over-sexed, not very intelligent, and the school bully. He picks on everyone. Nerd, dweeb, gay, disabled, ugly, has a whore mom, he doesn't care. Be cool and popular, or don't bother looking him in the eye. He'll toss you in a dumpster, throw food in your face, and generally terrorize you. The way he treats women isn't much better. Puck is a total womanizer, using them to bolster his reputation, and moving on to the next one when/if he realizes she isn't going to have sex with him. He has no problem influencing people to get what he wants from them, or dabbling in the illegal to get things done.

That isn't to say he doesn't have redeemable qualities. His family is very important to him. Puck does his best to provide for Quinn, the girl he knocks up, because he refuses to end up like his deadbeat father. He wants to be a man that's worth a damn, not a scumbag. Had Quinn decided to keep the baby, he would have embraced his job as a dad. When his mother expresses disappointment that he doesn't date a Jewish girl, he starts dating one. (Granted, it doesn't last long, but he wouldn't have looked at her longer than it took to splash a slushie in her face if not for his mom.) He's also a devoted team player. After he gets over his "Glee Club = Homo Explosion" phase and actually joins, he's willing to risk expulsion to defend people that used to make him want to light himself on fire.

Like most teenagers, he has insecurities, but he pushes them deep, deep down. He prefers to chase after older women because girls his own age are too picky and make him feel bad. He feels worse about the embarassment of getting a slushie in the face more than the sting of a corn-syruped eye. Puck's position as the most intimidating guy in the school means a lot to him, sending him into distress when he loses it. Most of the time, he would rather skip and cause trouble than show up to class and do his homework, as he isn't that smart. Not to mention spraying people with a fire extinguisher is a lot more fun than taking notes.

AU History (Sortinghat)
Puck is a halfblood, the product of the union of a muggle mom and a wizard dad. However, his father left when he as young, and so he was raised as a muggle. He was a pretty normal kid, his hobbies including sports, video games, and vandalizing things. When he received his letter from Hogwarts shortly after he turned eleven, his mom told him everything. At first, he had no desire to go to a magic school. His dad was a wizard, and he was a deadbeat jerk who walked out on them, and anything that would make him like his father, he was thoroughly against.

Then he realized how cool it would be to start fires without matches.

Once the novelty wore off and he properly grew into his teenage rebellion, Puck started treating Hogwarts the same way as he would have treated a Muggle high school. He skips class to make out with girls he barely knows, cheats on tests, and can't seem to stop terrorizing first-years. He shows up if the teacher is a hot chick, though, and because of that, the only classes he makes good grades in are the ones led by women. Someday he'll get with one (or more) of them, and that's about the extent of his life goals at this point.

Canon History
Puck was born into a Jewish family in a nowhere-town in Ohio. His father was a rambunctious party animal, and although he stuck around for a few years, he left when Puck was still a kid. Therefore, he and his younger sister were raised mostly by their mother. When he wasn't busy giving kids wedgies or playing sports (by his sophomore year in high school, Puck is on the football, basketball, and baseball teams), he's nurturing his voice. Puck believes that he has star potential, and that's what's going to get him out of the small-town nightmare he's faced with.

Things change when he has sex with his best friend's girlfriend, Quinn, and gets her pregnant. He does whatever he can to convince her that he'll be a good father, and to pick him over her boyfriend, Finn. These activities range from helping her babysit (during which he's sexting another girl) to trying to help pay for her doctor bills (with money stolen from the wheelchair-accessible bus fund - which was made by selling pot-cupcakes). Hey, he tries.

They have ups and downs, and during the downs he has no qualms seeing other girls, but after the baby is born, Puck admits to having loved her the whole time. The baby is adopted by a rival glee coach, and Quinn breaks up with him the summer before their junior year.
